Home Page Best Practices

Overview

The objectives of recommendations on the Home Page are to Inspire and orient customers on their shopping path. Get them to a product page as quickly as possible.

  • Quantity: 2+ placements. Given the page objective, it’s fine to be liberal here, particularly when we’re utilizing high-engagement, personalized strategies. For example, Amazon.com displays 6+ placements on their home page. For high-end or luxury retailers, stay closer to the minimum, so that recommendations feel more curated.

  • Location: As high up on the page as possible, but below the main “hero” image if powered by Engage. It’s common for retailers to object to allocating such prime real estate for recommendations, particularly if they’re showing generic top-sellers that have minimal relevance to the customer. We can typically assuage their concerns by only configuring personalized strategies and having the placement collapse in the absence of user-specific recommendations.

  • Strategies: It’s best practice to use personalized strategies on the Home page, and depending on the preferences of the retailers, default to top-seller or no recommendations for unrecognized users.
